The already cult film, “Fried Barry”, directed and written by AFDA alumnus Ryan Kruger,  AFDA alumnus Ryan “Fried Barry” has been nominated for 5 awards at the Rapid Lion Film Festival being held at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg from the 11-13 March. The nominations include Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing by AFDA alumnus Stephan du Plessis and Best Actor.

“Fried Barry” is a film completely out of the ordinary - a first in the history of South African cinema. It's a truly underground, cult film that is set to make its mark on world cinema. Barry is a drug-addled, abusive bastard who - after yet another bender - is abducted by aliens. Barry takes a backseat as an alien visitor assumes control of his body and takes it for a joyride through Cape Town, South Africa. What follows is an onslaught of drugs, sex and violence as our alien tourist enters the weird.

“Fried Barry” recently had its world premiere at the Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival in San Jose, California.

“I waited my whole life to make a feature film and screen it in the states. And now that dream has come true.” says Ryan.  “It was an amazing experience to go to America and screen my first feature film and to sit and watch it on the big screen and to see how people react to the film. People loved the movie!”
