26 November 2018, Alumni of the week
AFDA Live Performance alumnus, Eric Macheru, is an actor widely known in South African households for his role as ‘Leeto’ in the SABC1 drama series Skeem Saam.
He was however also applauded from the grandstands in soccer stadiums, playing professional soccer for Highlands Cape Town and Ajax Cape Town, before injury put a stop to his sporting career. His soccer career was ironically kick-started on television nationwide when he won the SABC1 reality competition, Sokka Kings in 2005. This victory awarded him the opportunity to train for a week at the English Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur along with a one-year contract with Highlands Cape Town.
Eric was born in Botlokwa, Polokwane and attended Kuschke Agricultural High School. Eric has always known what he wants in life - when he was little he knew he would be a professional soccer player and a filmmaker. After graduating from AFDA Eric got his first TV assignment with Pop Bottles TV alongside the likes of DJ Dimplez and fellow AFDA alumnus Thapelo Mokoena. “I got my break with soccer, but it’s been challenging breaking into the entertainment industry. Hard work always pays off,” he says.
In 2012 he joined the cast of the Mzansi Magic telenovela iNkaba in the role of ‘Rick’, a top model on Fumi’s level described as "the Tyson Beckford of iNkaba world". Eric has also presented on Vuzu’s celebrity lifestyle show, V Entertainment. In 2014 was cast on a South African television drama series, Mfolozi Street as ‘Msindo’.
It was recently announced that Eric was chosen as the brand ambassador for the Samson clothing line.
