For Immediate release                                                                         2017-07-13

The latest installment of the Spider-Man franchise, Spider-Man: Homecoming has smashed South African records for the series, notching up the biggest ever Spider-Man weekend opening for Sony Pictures Releasing International with over R8.2m in gross box-office takings and raking in a massive $250m worldwide. More good news for South Africa is that the block buster film was edited by one of our own, Debbie Berman.

Debbie graduated with a degree in Motion Picture Medium from AFDA Johannesburg in 2000, majoring in editing. After graduation she kicked off her editing career in South Africa working on the TV series Big Brother South Africa II and Big Brother Africa. Debbie goal was to work on feature films and after doing some research decided to give Vancouver (also known as Hollywood North) a bash. After a long journey of perseverance and hard work she made it to Vancouver where she got her first break editing the film Space Chimps in 2008. She then decided to make her way down south to Los Angeles and have a crack at the big time in Hollywood and has never looked back. She has since worked on Clint Eastwood’s Oscar nominated film Invictus,  the films Touchback, The United, The Zero Sum, In The Name of the King,  Black November, The Jesuit and  The Final Girls to name a few.

Debbie has also edited the TV series Mad Dogs, Timeless, Haven, Peak Season, 969 and Making The Cut as well as The Russel brand Documentary. In 2012 Debbie was awarded the Sally Menke Editing Fellowship by the Sundance Institute.

So while South African actors Charlize Theron and Arnold Vosloo take the accolades and pinch the headlines we should give a standing ovation to Debbie Berman behind the scenes in the edit suite. South Africa have a Spider-Women and she is making her web on the  Hollywood sign.
