4th Year BA Honours

The AFDA Honours programme is a one-year full-time degree designed to prepare graduates to enter the industry. It provides students with a deep vertical knowledge of their chosen discipline through individual research projects with direct usefulness for launching their careers. AFDA Honours students interact with the industry by means of discipline master classes presented by highly placed industry professionals, research project mentorship and supervision, and the option of internships at approved production companies. Honours graduates who intend to be part of the MFA feature film degree programme may use their fourth year as preparation for their 90-minute Masters degree feature film or feature documentary.

Outcomes:

Term 1:
12-minute documentary (digital format) Individual research document

Term 2: 24-minute dramatic narrative film (film or digital format) OR 48-minute dramatic narrative film (digital format only) adapted from a literary work OR a pilot episode of a formatted series, with an episode summary of the remaining episodes

Term 3: Individual research document Commercial production Public Service Announcement commercial (optional) Music video (optional)

Term 4: Exhibition and promotion of product and talent Internships.

Master of FIne Arts

The AFDA Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA) focuses on devel- oping innovative research into the production of feature-length motion pictures and television series. The degree has a strong emphasis on the market, audience consumption and cultural relevance. It offers direct participation in research thesis work of key conceptual disciplines and their contribution to targeting, tracking and categorizing the broader local audience profile. It is a self-contained programme in which a student may spe- cialise in any aspect of film production under the supervision of academics and highly experienced industry professionals.

Outcomes:

Individual research: Four individual research projects (5 000 words each) and one group research essay (5 000 words) One thesis (25 000 words)

Group Project: One feature-length dramatic narrative film of either 48 minutes or 90 minutes (film or digital format) adapted from a literary work
OR one feature-length documentary of a minimum length of 48 minutes OR a pilot episode of a drama series of a minimum of 48 minutes
OR a commissioned mini-series for television
