AFDA is the trading name for The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, and is an accredited private higher education institution. AFDA offers higher certificate and degree programmes that are registered by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Our programmes are accredited and we participate productively in the ongoing reaccreditation and quality assurance processes of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) to ensure the quality of our programmes. The DHET certificate number for AFDA is 2001/HE07/012.
AFDA Botswana is registered by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA).

The Undergraduate BCT degree in Business Innovation & Entrepreneurship is available at the Johannesburg, Cape Town & Durban Campuses.
The academic year cycle is from January – December with enrolment permitted from the first semester only at the Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban campuses.

Johannesburg: Matthew Glogauer
Matthew has a BA (Hons) from UNISA, a BA in English and Psychology from Wits, and is soon to begin working towards his Master Degree.
He has a wealth of experience in marketing and marketing strategy, consumer insights, and market intelligence. Having worked for companies like KLA, TNS, GfK, Tiger Brands and GSK, his experience includes working in SA and abroad, and working across multiple countries, categories, types of businesses etc. The common factor in this eclectic mix is that of human behaviour and decision-making, under-pinning Matt’s expertise in understanding and influencing consumer and user behaviour.
Cape Town: Steve Drake
MBA UCT & London Business School
Steve has always had a keen interest in the business of creative industries. Born in Cape Town, Steve studied Film and Broadcasting studies at New York University. Upon his return to South Africa in 1995, he worked as a Director of Photography on music videos, short films and commercials, and subsequently as a publicist for South African Film and Television Market amongst others. In 1998 he became the Co Director for the Cape Town International Film Festival and has schedule South African film seasons at international festivals such as Goteborg, Taormina and Tampera. Steve served on the jury of the 22nd Fanta Festival (dedicated to horror films) in Rome, and in London as co-director of the Celebrate South Africa Season at the National Film Theatre. Steve joined AFDA in 2003 as head of the producing department whilst researching his MBA thesis, How to win an Academy Award.
Durban: Arish Sirkissoon

Arish Sirkissoon (born 21 June 1984) better known by his stage-name LX SETH is a singer, songwriter, producer and academic. Sirkissoon has been in the entertainment field for the last decade and has signed deals locally and abroad. Sirkissoon has a firm academic background and also owns several businesses in different sectors. In the last decade Sirkissoon has had two number one singles and a record breaking movie.
UNDERGRADUATE BACHELORS DEGREE (BA/ BCOM/ BCT)
ENTRY INTO FIRST YEAR
- National Senior Certificate (South African Grade 12 / Matric) with endorsement for entry into a Bachelor’s degree.
- You may enter an AFDA Undergraduate degree if you have successfully completed an AFDA Higher Certificate course.
- The National Skills Certificate / National Certificate (Vocational) (NCV) on NQF level 4 with 3 fundamental subjects (incl English) above 60% and 4 vocational subjects above 70%.
- A technical N5 certificate with 4 subjects passed on N5 level incl Maths and English.
- The ACE School of Tomorrow (Accelerated Christian Education) on an achievement level similar to matric exemption.
- If you don’t have matric exemption but have passed the first year of an accredited programme on NQF 6 or 7 (first year of a diploma or degree).

ENTRY INTO SECOND YEAR
Like the Bachelor of Arts degree at AFDA, the core course modules for The AFDA School of Business and Innovation’s BCom and BCT degrees are a unique and progressive approach to deal with the vast expanse of knowledge and theories that are accessible today. More importantly, it is an approach to learning that is designed to stimulate innovative, conceptual and perceptual thinking; in doing so, allowing students to model and align existing knowledge to their integrated production outcomes. Shared production projects, team-based outcomes and evaluation act as the ’glue’ between various degrees and disciplines. Students from various disciplines integrate and share creativity and innovation in a networked, concrete, outcomes-based manner. Core course runs over the 3 years in the BCT and includes the following 5 components:
1) Assessing Analogue to Digital Efficiency Gap
2) Technological Advantage & Socio-cultural Development
3) Innovative Production & Implementation
4) Functional Design & Ease of Use Experience
5) Project Control & Maintaining Viability
There are four compulsory disciplines (areas of specialisation) in the first year of the BCT. From second year, the student will pursue two disciplines according to their aptitude and by third year, the student would major in one of those disciplines:
- Computer Technologies
*Computer Technologies is offered as a separate discipline in Year 1, but with technology constantly changing, from Year 2 onwards this is integrated into the other 3 disciplines: Programming, Networking and Data.
FIRST YEAR [DISCOVERY]
1st Year is about research analogue systems and devising a digital replacement application based on existing digital system. e.g. Film Archive or Talent Management and Exhibition system.
SECOND YEAR [TRAINING]
2nd Year is about originating a novel technology-enabling concept for managing data and for streaming television content online. They will also have a virtual reality project to do with creating an immersive digital experience in entertainment events.
THIRD YEAR [THE BIG IDEA - TECH INNOVATOR]
3rd Year integrates with all schools at AFDA around the Experimental and Graduation Festival events and identifying possibilities to add value through technology. Ideas of these possibilities include:
• An introduction of programmable drones for location research or shot efficiency
• Motion Capture rigs for Visual Effects & New Technologies
• Transmission systems for Radio or Image information
• Archiving systems for efficient programming

How does The AFDA School of Business Innovation and Technology BCom or BCT differ to a BCOM or BCT type degree at other Universities?
Our BCT has a number of elements that are similar to a traditional IT degree in order to ensure its underlying credibility. However it is unique in that it focuses on (not exclusively) the creative industries. These include entertainment & leisure, communication & media and arts & culture. These industries in turn, converge with a large number of diverse industries & sectors often referred to as the “Internet of Things”.

What is the duration of the BCT course? The Bachelor of Computer Technology degree is a 3 year full-time course which will run alongside AFDA’s other undergraduate degrees.
Will there be exams in The AFDA School of Business and Innovation programmes?
The Bachelor of Computer Technology (BCT) has an outcomes-based learning process and assessments. There are no exams.
