AFDA Johannesburg alumni Christian Joubert is an award winning South African Production Designer/Art Director who is described by many as someone who “lives” the film he designs. He is most critically acclaimed for his role in the Production Design of the Afrikaans film ‘Dis ek, Anna’ which landed him the Award for Best Achievement in Art / Production Design in a Feature Film at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) 2016. Christian latest film on which he is credited with production design ‘Nul Is Nie Niks Nie’, directed by Morne du Toit, is due for release on the 7 July 2017.
Christian attributes his success to all the opportunities he has had in his 6 year career in the film industry. He started his career in the film industry soon after graduating from AFDA – South African School of Motion Picture Design and Live Performance – in 2010 with Production Design as his Major. He fulfilled many duties, within the production design department, before taking up Art Directing and Production Designer roles, including Props Master, Set Builder, Designer and Set Dresser roles in films such as Hoofmeisie, Snare, Angel of the Skies, Wolwedans in die skemer, Veraaiers, Musiek vir die agtergrond and Mandela’s Gun.
Once the industry started recognising Christian’s creativity and ability to realise the visual aspects of a film, his responsibilities shifted towards the role of Production Designer. The films included on his resume against the role of Production Designer are, Jou Romeo, Dis Ek Anna, Suurlemoen, Agnet2000: Die Laksman, Ek Joke net 2, Stuur Groete aan Mannetjies Roux, and of course the second sequel to the Popular Bakgat! series, Bakgat! Tot die mag 3.
Christian has also been involved in art directing and production design roles in numerous television series, commercials and stage productions. He sees himself as a visual artist and involves his time in as many of its forms of expression as he possibly can.
