Damien Tomaselli – Image Production Department & Virtual Reality lecturer at AFDA Durban – recently attended a virtual reality workshop – Lights, Camera, Interaction – organised through The Groupement Européen des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision (GEECT) Conference at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland (29 May – 1 June 2016)
The conference connected educators interested in combining established conventions of filmmaking towards the development of a cinematic language for virtual and augmented reality.
The purpose of the conference was to rethink visual aesthetics, narrative structure and cinematic conventions in relation to the current Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Issues such framing in a 360 degree environment, as well as technical considerations were engaged with. Participants engaged with a 48 hr process of creating a short virtual reality narrative. Areas of cinematography, lighting, compositing, storyboarding, spatial design, sound design, performance and directing and production workflow were focused on.
