Four AFDA Durban 2016 3rd and 4th year student films have been nominated in the Best Student Film category at the Simon Sabela Film and Television Awards. That makes it a clean sweep – four nominations for AFDA out of the four nominations for the award.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of the 2016 3rd year experimental films “Stray” and “Affirmation in Smoke”, the 4th year honours film “Amandiya” and the 3rd year graduate film “Renaissance”.
The Simon Sabela Film and Television Awards were conceptualised by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in 2012 and were handed over to KZNFC following its establishment. The awards are a critical link to our mandate which is to ensure the inclusive and sustainable growth of the KwaZulu Natal film industry. To ensure the seamless implementation of the awards, the KwaZulu Natal Film Commission appointed an Awards committee comprising of representatives of the Durban Filmmakers Guild, the eThekwini Filmmakers Association and the Durban Film Office who are responsible for: overseeing and guiding the process of judging from the call for entries, the judging categories, the rules and guidelines, the composition of the judging panels (typically including industry peers and experts) and ensuring that the award judging process is free, fair and transparent through the appointment of independent auditors.
The awards will take place on 15 July 2017, at the Durban Playhouse, where all the winners will be revealed.
