AFDA Cape Town Gets “Punk in Africa”

AFDA Cape Town’s Dr. Lucia Saks and Steven Buxt invite Afda students and staff members to attend one of our master classes that will take place on Wednesday 16 November 2016 from 10am -5pm in the Cinema venue. International filmmakers Keith Jones and Gary K. Griffen will be talking about “Visual Storytelling and Production”.

Keith & Gary are over in Cape Town shooting the documentary, For Your Precious Love’, (produced by Stevan Buxt) on the legendary South African band, “The Flames”.

Keith Jones:

Keith Jones is a Prague-based film-maker, working in Czech Republic and South Africa, with extensive background in music-related projects. Program Director of the MOFFOM International Festival of Music Documentaries, 2005-2008. His work focuses on the intersection between alternative culture and politics, including Punk in Africa (2012) on punk subcultures in Southern African political history, and Urban Beats / Rural Roots (2015), exploring the global impact of electronic music from rural South Africa. He is also a writer and collaborator of the world music division of National Geographic and Czech state radio. Recent publications include articles for Rolling Stone South Africa and liner notes for award-winning record label Light in the Attic.

Gary K. Griffin

Award-winning New York cinematographer Gary K. Griffin (Academy Award for Best Documentary 1994, Best Cinematographer Award, Sundance Film Festival 2005) has shot several South African documentary projects including Punk in Africa, as well as a number of high profile music documentaries with director Barbara Kopple, including multiple award-winning Shut Up and Sing (2007) and most recently Miss Sharon Jones! (Main competition Toronto Film Festival, opening film Doc NYC, 2015). He is a former Fullbright Fellow at the University of Johannesburg and currently serves as Artist in Residence at American University, Washington, DC.  He is also the director of the recently released independent Czech feature film Listopad.
