AFDA alumni and Egg Films’ Terence Neale is preparing for yet another walk up the red carpet. He is the only South African director shortlisted at the Shots Awards, hosted by the leading international trade magazine.

Terence is nominated in the Commercial of the Year: Online (Up To Two Minutes) category for adidas Originals Your Future Is Not Mine, shot with RSA Films for Johannes Leonardo. The short is also nominated for Best Use of Music, thanks to vocalist Daisy Hamel-Buffa and Squeak E Clean Productions.

Earlier this year, Your Future Is Not Mine earned Terence his third Gold Direction Craft in three years at The Loeries, as well as a Gold Craft for cinematography. The short, which challenges the dominant perception of the future being dystopian, also won a Gold Music Craft at Cannes Lions and two Association of Independent Commercials Producers (AICP) Awards for Music and Art Direction.

Over 170 million YouTube hits!!!!!!

Terence was born and raised in Johannesburg. In Jozi he developed an appreciation of street culture by watching skate videos on VHS tapes and loitering in city parks – an aesthetic prevalent in his work today.

Since 2007, Terence has been directing spots for a number of clients, including KFC, Chicken Licken and Nando’s – making him the unofficial title holder for the most chicken commercials under his belt. He also finds time to direct some excellent non-chicken-related commercials.  His darkly humoured ‘Chicken Licken Slyders’ commercial “Orphanage” for Net#work BBDO, Johannesburg, earned inclusion in SHOOT’s “The Best Work You May Never See” gallery.

A creative collaboration with Die Antwoord in 2012 (“Baby’s On Fire,” – 38 602 252 You Tube views and“Fatty Boom  Boom”- 26 602 252 YouTube views) marked Terence’s successful initiation into the treacherous but rewarding terrain of music video direction. His following project – a music video for Skrillex’s Ragga Bomb features dueling waste trolley surfers in a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, Johannesburg landscape. To date, the music video has clocked over 65 957 833 views on YouTube.

Terence has secured U.S. and U.K. representation, joining RSA and Black Dog for commercials/branded content and music videos, respectively.

Not one to choose sides, Terence’s talent is to employ both visual and narrative storytelling in his work.

Although he’s not one to list his awards or accolades, let’s just say he has received a fair amount of them. He also named his cat Steve Martin, which we think is example enough of his intelligence and talent.
